Spending Time With God's Word

Spending Time With God's Word

Why Spend Time With God's Word?

"People do not live by bread alone, rather we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord."

 Deuteronomy 8:3

With as much thought and care that we put into the healthy foods we eat, even more thought and care should be put into spending time with God's Word.

The world may give varying opinions on how to live, but God's Word will always take authority. As Jesus [the Word made flesh, John 1:14] said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 Without the Word, we cannot live the abundant lives that God has planned for each of us.

When to Spend Time With God's Word?

As a wife and mother, it's easy for my day to quickly fill up, so I know that it can feel tempting to push God's Word to the end of our never ending to do lists. But if we make it the first thing on our list; how much more meaningful and grounded our lives can be. It doesn't have to be an entire book, or honestly even a chapter. We can sit with at least one verse at the start of each morning and keep it at the forefront of our minds that entire day.

How to Spend Time With God's Word?

I believe that God is after a personal relationship with each of us, not a rigid one; because there are so many options available to us, to digest His Word. Whether it's through the Bible App, a devotional, on audio, a podcast, or directly in our physical Bible: He has clearly made Himself available to us. But with however we spend time with it, it's important to digest it for what it actually means and not for what we want it to; allowing it to be a mirror to us [showing us where we are in comparison to it and allowing it to transform us and our lives for the better. Reference: James 1:22-25].

I enjoy each of the shared options, but I find that I feel the most "full" and connected to God's Word when I slow down and do word studies. Instead of trying to read as much as possible in one sitting, or reading a daily verse and moving on, I do the following:

  1. Pray to God for understanding of His Word.
  2. Read the verse I'm studying in the King James Version.
  3. Write down the definition/ translation of each word in the verse, using a Strong's Concordance.
  4. Reflect on what the verse means based on the definitions and how it may pertain to my life, then pray to God about it.
  5. Sometimes, I like to read the same verse in other translations and read through commentaries as well.

This is not the only method to use when seeking understanding from God and His Word. There are so many methods out there, but ultimately it is the Holy Spirit that gives us the revelations we need.
